Eugene Harold Barbery

d. November 16, 2021

Eugene Harold Barbery went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Tuesday November 16, 2021 at the age of 78.  He was born May 15, 1943 to George and Gladys Barbery.  Harold is survived by his daughter and son in law, Vivian and Rick Brewer; his son and daughter in law Gene and Teresa Barbery; his sister Marcella (Ron) Roch; twin brother James Barbery; 5 grandchildren Patricia, Miranda, Gene, Christian and Camron; 3 great grandsons and a great granddaughter; his sister and brother-in-law Rose and Bob Green and many nieces, nephews and personal friends.

He was recently preceded in death by the love his life Bonita May Barbery whom he married October 3, 1966. They met while working at General Motors and were married for 54 years.  The intensity of their love couldn’t keep them apart any longer.   Harold was originally from Rural Retreat, Virginia and moved to Ohio at the age of 18.  He got hired at General Motors not long after coming to Ohio and eventually retired after 30 years.  Harold was in the United States Army and served in the Vietnam War.

Harold was a very strong, hard-working man.  His talent for building and creating things was unmeasured.  He spent many years doing construction work including building houses, concrete work, barns, out buildings, gazebos, metal fabrication and even wooden crafts.  He could build anything.  Bonnie often drew his next project to undertake or the next thing on his “honey do list”.

Tractors and vintage cars were a love of his and going to car and tractor shows was something he really enjoyed.  He could tell you everything about them as you walked around with him admiring them and hearing about which ones he had owned or which ones he would like to take home with him.

Harold was a strong, Christian man who made sure his family knew the love of God and how deeply he loved each of them.  Heaven definitely gained a grand angel.  Harold was a true man of character in every sense of the word.  There are not enough words to describe the kind of man that Harold was….kind, patient, loving, soft-hearted, funny, sweet, smart, mentor, friend, father, honest and a true man of his word.  He gave his whole heart to those around him and he meant the world to so many people.

Harold loved his animals and rescued hundreds of strays over the years.  He spent hours in the winter tearing up bread for the birds and on really cold days, he would make sure he took it out at least twice a day.  His birds, as he would say were always “pleasingly plump”.  It didn’t matter the cost, feeding his animals always came first.  He even fed the neighbor’s dog twice a day that walked half a mile to see what Harold put out for him.  Didn’t matter opossum, skunk, squirrel, bunny…he fed them all.

Harold requested to be cremated with no funeral or memorial service.  Donations in his honor can be made to the Fayette County Humane Society, 153 S. Main Street, Washington Court House, OH or on-line: www.fayetteregionalhumane.org.

The Porter-Tidd Funeral Home, 331 West Main St., Mt. Sterling, OH 43143, assisted the family. Please visit www.portertiddfuneralhome.com to share your favorite memories and to send your condolences to Harold’s family.
