George Albert Fields, known to family and friends as Albert, was called by God to the eternal farm in heaven on December 22, 2013. He joins his parents, Harley Albert and Rachel Cook Fields; sister and brother-in-law, Mary Evelyn and Bud Smithson, and many other loved ones.
Albert was born Dec. 14, 1923 and raised in Adams and Highland Counties in Ohio. He graduated from West Union High School in 1941. He married Ruth Marie Vance on March 12, 1950 in Hillsboro, Ohio. They have lived in the Derby area farming since 1952. Their son, Jerrold Albert Fields farmed with his Dad helped by Mike George. Daughter, Shirley is married to Tim McCoy with granddaughter Amy.
Albert was active in his community. He was a member of the Derby United Methodist Church, Pickaway County Farmers Club, former I.O.O.F. and Derby Men’s Club. He served as Darby Township Clerk for 23 years and was recognized in 2006 by the Southwest Community Church of the Nazarene for Outstanding Achievement for his many years of service and dedication to the agricultural community.
Albert always had a garden that he shared bounty from and was hauling grain from the farm this fall. His 90th birthday was celebrated by many nieces and nephews on December 14th and was recognized at church on Sunday. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends.
Visitation will be held Friday, December 27 from 5 – 8 pm at the PORTER-TIDD FUNERAL HOME, Mt. Sterling. The funeral service will be held at the DERBY UNITED METHODIST CHURCH at 11:00 am on Saturday, December 28th. Rev. Leland Brehm officiating with the burial following in Pleasant Cemetery in Era, Ohio. Family will receive friends one hour prior to service.
In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Derby United Methodist Church.
